Kinds of items and item types in JTL-Wawi

On this page you can read the definitions of the different kinds of items and item types in JTL-Wawi.

    Kinds of items

The different kinds of items include Standard items, Parent items, Child items, Configuration items, and Bills of materials. These different kinds of items are explained below.

    Standard items

A standard item can be a football, for example. To learn how to create a standard item in JTL-Wawi go here: Creating items.

    Variation items

With variation items, your customer can select a variation, for example a T-shirt that is available in different colours.

Example: You sell long-sleeved shirts in yellow and green. Your customer can choose between the two colours.

    Parent items

Parent items contain the different variations of an item and are the parent item of the child items.

Example: You are selling long-sleeved shirts in several different sizes and colours. The parent item is the long-sleeved shirt while S, M, L and yellow, green, blue are the variations.

Parent items are not independent items, they are the sum of their children. Therefore, a parent item cannot be a BOM or BOM component. To learn how to create parent items and configure their values, go here: Creating variation items.

    Child items

Child items are independent items, which consist of a combination of the variation values of the parent item.

Example: If the parent item is a long-sleeved shirt with the variations S, M, L and yellow, green, blue, one possible child item is a: long-sleeved shirt, M, green. This is a stand-alone item that can be managed and maintained like an ordinary item.

    Configuration items

A configuration item is an item that contains configuration groups that in turn contain different components. Components are common items in JTL-Wawi. By offering components, you can give your customers the opportunity to create individual item configurations in your online shop.

Example: You are selling a barbell set. Your customers select the length of the bar as well as the weight and quantity of the plates themselves. The barbell set itself is the configuration item and the individual weights and different bars are the components.

To learn how to create configuration groups, go here: Creating configuration groups.

    Bills of materials

Bills of materials (BOMs) are items that are comprised of one or several other items. The individual items of the BOM are called components. A bill of materials requires at least one component and can have an indefinite number of components in varying quantities. There are several ways to use BOMs:

Example: You can use BOMs for product bundles and sets, in which you offer several items together. For example, this could be a martial arts starter set, in which you sell boxing gloves, bandages and a tooth guard.
Example: You can use BOMs for different packing units of a product. For example, you sell loose tea and want to offer it in 50g, 100g and 250g.
Child items as bills of materials

You have the option of using child items as a BOM. This is advisable if you want to offer the same item with different names, for example.

Example: During Halloween, you offer bunny costumes under the item name “Bunny costume” in various sizes and colours in your online shop. You also offer the same item in the different sizes and colours during Easter season as an Easter bunny costume. You now want to link the two items and make sure that the stock is posted correctly.
